ESSAY: What They Carried

OH_2017_Carry_coverWhen you leave your home behind, what do you bring with you?  This was the question I explored with Oregon Humanities magazine, asking refugees to Oregon what they carried with them on the journey here.  The answers – a key, some stamps, a basket – opened up amazing stories.  I collaborated with amazing Kim Oanh Nguyen on this photo essay and her pictures are stunning and intimate.  My goal in writing is always to make the prevailing narrative more complex, to show the nuances that undercut assumption. The people I interviewed were so generous with their time and their stories – I really recommend reading this one.
