I wrote a reported essay on my childhood neighborhood, Irvington, a much-changed and much-beloved historic district in Portland, Oregon. It’s taken me almost 2 years to work on their piece, with extensive interviews and academic research. Plus, I got to go haunt the 4-square courts of my childhood. If you’re interested in gentrification, displacement, history, preservation, and the way we tell the stories of our cities, this is for you. It comes out in The Riveter, an amazing magazine of journalism by women (please do yourself a favor and check out their other features). Read the story online here.
