ESSAY: Inside the Whale

In my essay “Inside the Whale,” I wrote about George Orwell, Finding Nemo, the terrifying anxieties of motherhood, this political moment in America, bear scat, school shooting, and werewolves.

You know that feeling of losing control—whether it’s watching something bad happen to someone you love, or watching your country slide into its worst authoritarian impulses? I wanted to write about that feeling, that helpless stuck feeling, when you have to let go.

Kachemak Bay, Alaska. I went hiking there when I was pregnant with my son, before I realized that parenthood was going to involve a kind of world-bending anxiety.
